Frequent Waste Problems Associated With Livestock

By Lianne Derocco

Unless a person is into hog farming, he will not know the intricate things to run this business successfully, but this business is a huge one. Hog waste is one concern and issue to be tackled with by the hog farmer. Hog waste can harm the surrounding environment, and this should be prevented, thus the waste should be treated, and storing waste is also one big concern.

Hogs produce a great deal of waste which is either stored in a waste pit or a waste lagoon. The waste releases a number of toxic gases, such as methane, carbon dioxide and ammonia. In addition, waste also contains traces of antibiotics that are given to the hogs. Bacteria, pesticides and heavy metals also sometimes are present in waste lagoons.

These gases and substances can be quite harmful to the surrounding environment, particularly if the lagoon leaks and the toxins are released into the soil and groundwater. Ensuring that your lagoon doesn't leak or overflow is highly important. Precautionary measures must be taken in order to ensure the safety of these lagoons, and this should be one of the farmer's highest priorities.

Other problems that often occur include the formation of a tough top crust or a bottom sludge layer. Waste should be as liquefied as possible, so when sludge or crust begins to form, it is important to take action.

However, it is also important that farmers don't add more toxins to the environment, so they need to use a natural product. There are natural solutions for agricultural waste on the market that are ideal to use as a hog manure treatment. Agra Sphere uses a mix of naturally occurring bacteria to eat away at the sludge and the crust, helping to liquefy the waste. There are no chemicals in this product, and the sphere itself is biodegradable and does not need mixing in order to work. You simply toss in enough spheres to accommodate the size of your lagoon or waste pit.

In addition, this product also will reduce the odors from your hog waste system as well as the amount of flies. Foaming, another common hog waste problem, is reduced when using Agra Sphere. This product also improves the value of the manure, making it more nutrient rich and subsequently a better quality of fertilizer.
