Why Use Cones For Dogs After Surgery?

By Annabelle Holman

The wound sustained after a surgery to remove a sexual organ of dog, as per the vets recommendation, should well nursed and cleaned to keep infections at bay. The stitched area operated during the surgery would be the targeted area for chewing and biting due to the itchiness surrounding it which might cause irritation and bacterial infections. Cones for dogs with fresh wounds from surgery could help in the recovery and healing process.

The cone shape of the e-collar is used to hinder the dog from reaching its hindquarters whenever it feels like licking and they are normally placed on top of the normal regular dog collar. In accordance with the variety in dog sizes and shapes the collars have been made to accommodate them all, the pet products outlets and the vet stores are stocked with the collars.

The changes are not taken very well by dogs and reactions are varied from dog to dog, with some opting for an endless struggle to free themselves of the collar to others relentlessly standing in an upright position up to a point of maximum exhaustion where they just pass out. As a dog owner some of these occurrences come as a package with the surgery.

It is important to purchase the collar in advance since, even though not all dogs are chewers, in that condition they are quite unpredictable. The cone is not merely a method to avoid licking but also a part and parcel of the healing process of the dog.

The first few days after surgery are very scary to both the pet and the owner and with the e-collar issue? It does not get any worse, but with it being the sure way to quick recovery they both just to bear with it. The urinating process of the dog should be monitored regularly as well as the licking of the wounds which in this case is catered for by the e-collar.

E-collars are made from varied materials ranging from plastic, synthetic to cotton. The material used in a certain collar is more than likely going to affect the behavior of the dog, for example, dogs that have plastic collars are more aggressive and defensive as compared to dogs with the other types. This means that collar material affects the behavior of a dog significantly.

Its virtually impossible to ensure that the wounds of the dog are clean all day long since dogs are not famous for lazing around in one place, as part of the solution e-collars ensure that the dog does not infect itself by licking, biting or chewing the wound. This is done to ease up the pain as well as clean the wound but it is proven to be a doorway for various bacteria and other infections. To ensure that this is adhered to, e-collars act on behalf of the eyes of the owner all day.

Unless otherwise the e-collar could pass for a punishment to the dog but considering the help the collar offers it would be crude to deny that it is a form of caring and appreciation to the dog. The recovery of the dog is more important.
