Cat Lovers Looking To Buy Bengal Kittens Should Know These Interesting Facts

By Janine Hughes

Anyone who is looking for an affectionate cat with a distinctive appearance, may want to consider a Bengal cat. These breed was developed by mating a regular domestic cat with an Asian Leopard Cat, which is a wild species. The result is an exotic-looking cat with the same temperament of other lovable family pets. Before they decide to go ahead and buy Bengal kittens, it's a good idea for people to find out more about this breed and what their specific needs are.

An elegant cat, the Bengal's beautiful coat is its most impressive features. Its rich, silky fur can be either chocolate, cinnamon, black, silver, charcoal, snow, or brown, with a spotted or marbled marking pattern. When sunlight hits their coat, it is known to shine like gold.

Larger in size than some other types of cats, they can weigh between 8 and 15 pounds on average, with males generally being heavier than females. The size of their ears and head is also comparatively small for the size of their bodies, which is a trait they inherit from their wild cat ancestors.

Much like the tabby cat, Bengals bear the "thumbprint" mark in front of each ear, which has less fur and is shaped like a thumb. Another similarity to the tabby is the M-shaped marking on the forehead. They have a slim, strong body shape which lends itself to their agility, and their backs may appear arched in some stances due to the front legs being a bit shorter than the back legs.

Bengals are a very active breed that prefers engaging play and activities to lying around. Highly intelligent, they can play games and even learn tricks much like a dog can. Other pets and children make welcome playmates for this energetic, affectionate, and fearless cat, and they love to play with stimulating toys. Some owners also walk these cats on a leash, which they also enjoy.

A very vocal breed, Bengals will be sure to let their owner know if they need their litter box cleaned, or if they want to be fed by meowing loudly. They do not avoid water like most other cats do, these bold felines don't hesitate to drink right from the tap, and may even take an interest in investigating the shower. Keeping them indoors is recommended so they don't get stolen for their uniqueness, or continue to bring in their prey, since they naturally love to hunt. If the cat is unhappy remaining indoors, an outdoor enclosure is a suitable solution.

It is safest to purchase Bengal kittens from a registered breeder who has a good reputation for raising healthy animals. Adopting a kitten that has been properly socialized and screened for illnesses Bengals are susceptible to such as chronic anemia and heart disease should be a priority. Contrary to popular belief, these cats are not immune to feline leukemia.

Some basic care is needed for Bengals. Their nails should be trimmed bi-weekly, teeth brushed daily to prevent gum disease, and eyes and ears wiped with a damp cloth or cotton balls as needed. Combing their fur once a week is necessary to keep it tidy and shiny.
