What To Look For When Buying The Best Dog Beds For Small Dogs

By Tammie Caldwell

Dogs may not ask for things to keep them comfortable but they sure do enjoy being able to stretch out and relax. If you are looking for ways to keep your pet healthy, happy and relaxed, a padded bed may be one way to do this. Here are some things to consider when searching for the best dog beds for small dogs. By looking for these features you can feel confident your small pup is going to have the comfort he or she is looking for.

The good news is that these items do not need to take up as much space as those designed for larger canines but there are a few factors and features that you should look for. If you do, you have a better chance of getting a model that both you and your canine companion will love.

Most beds are made up of some sort of cushion or pillow. If you want to get the most wear out of your particular bed, you may want to look for models that have a removable cover. This should be washable. If you can clean the outside, it can be a lot easier to remove any hair or dirt that is accumulated.

Stuffing material is also important. Some stuffing types can become lumpy especially if it is being laundered. If you worry about pests or want your pet's bed to smell nice for an extended period of time, look for cushions filled with cedar shavings or chips. You may find that they are too lumpy or may aggravate people who have allergies to this particular wood.

For many people, it is important to ensure that the bed fits in well with other furniture. If this is the case for you, look for wooden frames that match other wooden furniture and mattresses that are covered in fabric that also fits in well with your upholstered items.

If you have a specific place in mind for the bed, you may want to measure the space where the bed will be placed. Then you can make sure that it will fit well where you want to put it. Remember that unless the bed has a frame the cushion may spread and end up taking up more space than you originally intended it to do.

Durability is also important. Remember that any dog may try and dig and small dogs often have longer nails. You may want to make sure that the dog cannot chew on any tags and that the style of mattress you choose also does not have any buttons on the surface. These may get chewed off and become foreign bodies that can cause serious medical issues.

Once you know what you are looking for you can start shopping. You can find beds in many different stores and on websites as well. If you are looking online you may want to look at the cost of shipping so that you know how much you will end up paying by the time your bed has been shipped.
