By Joseph Schwartz

Acquiring a dog can be a gigantic commitment, especially if you decide on one that will grow up to be quite big. By picking one of the small dog breeds however, you'll not only spend way less money but have less responsibilities too. There are a handful of things to consider first though.

Many people are much better off with a low energy pooch. This could be because you simply don't have enough time to go for long walks or are not someone who enjoys serious exercise. If this is the case there are many small dog breeds that could be ideal for you. You might want to consider a Pug, Dachshund, or Chihuahua as these all can do just fine with minimal daily exercise.

If you are a very active person there are many breeds that would do well with your lifestyle. Anyone who is athletic or loves to walk, jog, or run would be do great with a Jack Russell Terrier, Miniature Bull Terrier, or a Wire-haired Fox Terrier. These are all small sized dog breeds that are big in personality and in exercise needs.

The color of a canine can play a role in some prospective owner's decision making process. It all depends what your preferences are. Color might not matter to you at all. The most sought after color group are actually small white dog breeds. This means the Bichon Frise, Maltese, and Toy Poodle.

Choosing a name can be one of the most fun parts of buying a little dog. This is doubly true if it is a boy. There are so many cute male dog names that you'll smile just saying them aloud. You can find them in your favorite movies, books, and TV shows or online. If you decide on a female there are many too so don't worry.

When contemplating a petite pooch be sure to keep the above information in mind. It will ensure you are on the right path towards finding the breed that is best for you and your family.
