The Best Advantages Of Owning Small Dog Breeds

By Mike Hienstat

Having a dog is one of the most pleasing experiences in many people's lives. Sadly, however, a lot of prospective owners give up on their dream of owning one because they think they don't have the space or time to take care of a pooch. However, normally this is not the reality of the situation. So here are the top 5 benefits of own a small dog breed that will show you just how simple it can be.

One of the best things about having a tiny dog is that you don't have to live in a huge house or have a yard, an apartment will do. Bigger pets need larger spaces however most small dog breeds are more than happy even in what would be considered cramped apartments. Luckily this means that an enormous amount of people are able to keep their canines in places that would not work for much bigger pooches.

When choosing a pup you do have a very wide array to pick from. It doesn't matter if you prefer breeds with curly tails, pointy ears, an excess of wrinkles, or just small white dog breeds, there is something for you. Since every breed does have traits that they are known for in both their appearance and personality it makes weeding out the ones that don't work for you very easy.

For exercise, you won't have to worry about spending multiple hours per day walking or jogging with your pet as is often the case with medium and large size dogs. Each breed and even individual dog will have its own needs but in general they need only a fraction of the time and effort to keep them healthy and happy. Even though a few popular small dog breeds such as the Jack Russell Terrier may be high energy it's still a much more manageable situation for the average owner than dealing with a pooch that's bigger in size.

Properly taking care of pets of any size means extra expenses. But for dogs the smaller they are the less those costs end up being. Whether it is an operation at the veterinarian or food at the pet shop you will pay a fraction of the price that owners of big canines will. Small sized dog breeds simply need less of everything which means more cash in your pocket.

An advantage that a lot of owners are very appreciative of is the fact that little doggies can be excellent watchdogs. While they can't stop a thief or criminal they can alert you to their presence and even scare them away. Terriers in general are known for their ability to keep watch over their home and family by barking when they encounter something or someone suspicious.

It's easy to see that there are a wealth of perks to owning one of the small dog breeds. So be sure not to overlook them when thinking about adding a furry friend to your family.
