4 Things To Consider When Naming Pets

By Robin Setser

If you think that there is nothing to naming a pet, you probably never owned one before. It's not far-fetched for someone to let their animal friend go nameless for weeks. However, the challenge of deciding on an identity doesn't have to be troublesome. For those that would like to know how to give their pets the best names possible, here are 4 methods that you would be wise to carry out.

First and foremost, make sure that you choose a name that you can easily remember. It's not any different from selecting a password for your social media account or a PIN for your debit card; you should be able to recall it at the drop of a hat. This is usually why simpler one-word names tend to work best for most household pets. This is just one of many tips that companies like Assisi Animal Health will be able to provide.

You might also want to choose a name for a pet based on their personality. For example, "Sparky" might be a great name for a dog that's outgoing and friendly, even toward strangers. On the flipside, the same name probably wouldn't work for a pet that's more introverted by comparison. Sometimes selecting a name comes down to the personality that a pet exhibits, which is another factor to keep in mind.

You might also want to avoid names that sound too much like commands you'd give. A common command that's given to a dog is "stay." If you decide to give your dog the name "Bray," for example, the animal might mistake that as a command, meaning that you won't get the desired reaction. For this reason, you have to be especially careful about name selection, as pets can become confused.

For those that are still stumped on names, you should take inspiration from media. It's not abnormal for pet owners to use names from their favorite books, movies, and TV shows, so why not follow suit? If nothing else, this will allow your animal friend to stand out, since names from the aforementioned media aren't exactly common. As a matter of fact, who's to say that you can't start a trend by doing so?
