What You Need To Know About Savannah Cats

By Timothy Reed

If you are like many cat lovers, the idea of a sleek looking wild cat is something you want to add to your home. Savannah cats are big, beautiful, intelligent beasts but they are not the best choice for every household. Here is what you need to know about these cats so that you can decide whether one would be a good addition to your family.

A large number of people love the idea of having an exotic wildcat in their home and a Savannah can be a great way to do this. They lack many of the drawbacks that having an actual wildcat in your home would have. They are fun, playful companions while keeping the striking, exotic appearance that so many people love.

The first members of this breed appeared in the 1990's when a Serval (a smaller African wildcat) was bred to a Siamese. It took some time and hard work but finally the breed was recognized internationally. The first breeders worked hard to come up with a standard set of qualities that these cats need to have in order to be quality breeding animals.

When looking at these felines, you will notice that some are much larger than others. This is because first generation or second generation crosses have much more Serval blood in them. Some cats can weigh as much as twenty pounds and can be the size of a small dog once they are fully grown. Even smaller cats will often have the striking coat and playful personality of their larger counterparts.

If you do get a kitten that is a first or second generation cross you will need to do some work to prepare your home. You will need a large container to use as a litter box. Most cats do not like to be cramped and want room to dig and move around while going to the bathroom. A larger container will help with this. Many owners of these felines also mention that they need to cat-proof their home more than they would with other felines as Savannahs are very good at getting into cupboards or closets.

Some breeds of cat such as the Bengal can be incredibly intense and often need a lot of play or stimulation to keep them happy. A Savannah, on the other hand, will often have more of a laid-back personality that is quite similar to a dog in many respects. Because of their size you will need to make sure that any toys or furniture are as large and as well-made as possible.

These cats can be quite expensive. First or second generation crosses can cost thousands of dollars. As you get to further generations the pets will be smaller but will also cost less than first or second generation crosses will. Keep in mind, however, that even within the same litter there can be quite a difference in the size of the kittens.

There are a few things that you should look for in a breeder before you purchase one of their kittens. The adults should be healthy and happy and the offspring should be well socialized. You also want to make sure that the breeder can show you the lineage of their pets so that you know what generation cross you are getting. This can help give you important clues about the eventual size of your adult when it finally matures.
