By Margaret Bailey

You may have landed on this article page at this moment since you are basically looking for a new pet to keep you company, or even a replacement one at that. You saw a sign earlier made by Chinese crested powder puff breeders selling puppies and this has somewhat piqued your interest. Before you do go and march down there to make a purchase, do finish this article first.

It is a good idea to perhaps take a step back and honestly gauge your intentions for taking on a pet. If it is nothing more than just for the fun of it or because it is a fad then do not do it. It is good to put into mind that you will need to be committed and responsible as the life of an animal is on the line. Part and parcel of being a responsible owner is to learn more about the breed in question before taking it on.

This breed is so named as the Chinese crested dog because of the crest on its head. If you know what the mane of a horse looks like, it will give you a general idea as to the physical appearance of this crest. The breed has two distinct variations being the regular one and the powder puff. The latter has the crest except the whole body is covered in fur, while as for the regular one, it will only have hair only have hair on its head, the ends of its legs and tail while the rest of the body is basically bald.

Despite their physical differences, these two varieties are alike in all other matters. The origin of this breed is thought to have been in China due to the name. However, research has shown that the real origin of the dog was in Africa, which was brought onto ships by Chinese traders to help with pest control. They later became popular in China and hence the name.

In most if not all international dog registers, this dog will be classified under the toy breed section. It is a small dog and will reach about one foot on average at the shoulder and reach a maximum of twelve pounds upon maturity. It does have an average lifespan of around ten to fourteen years, but this can still be lengthened with proper nutrition, love and care.

Quite a few dog lovers will also comment that this dog was specifically bred for the invalid. This is because it can be quite content just being with you perfectly still or just hanging around on your lap the whole day. It is a dog that has very minimal exercise requirement, being at around less than twenty minutes per day.

Despite its size, you will have your schedule cut out for you in terms of grooming this breed properly. If you have the hairless variety you need to give it baths regularly of anywhere from two to three times a week to prevent skin infections. If you have the full haired one, you need to give it regular brushings once a day to maintain both smoothness and softness of the coat.

In terms of personality, this dog is extremely friendly and socializes well with other animals and children. Generally it is also quite friendly towards strangers as well. Care should be taken however in terms of rough play as it is kind of small and will likely be injured.
