Tips On How To Choose A Slow Feeder For Hay

By Timothy Bell

Slow feeders are great developments for equines this will allow only a few portions of hay that could be withdrawn at a single time. This is similar with the natural pattern and it keeps the horses more busy for long periods and avoid the stretching of hours when horses have nothing to put in their stomachs. Many owners are happy with the nets because this will lengthen the rides on trailers and prevents the animals from getting hungry. When it comes with slow feeders for horses, owners must purchase the right equipment to feed their animals.

Horses would feel much happy when they can just nibble hays for several hours rather than eating them all at one time. This eliminates the possibility of letting them stand around doing nothing except wait for the next feeding time. This gives the digestive tracts at peace because they only digest a few amount of food but the supply of fibers are continuous.

Let the animals feel calm and accustomed to the technique by putting out some bales of hay on the ground and in the equipment. After some time, they will get accustomed to it and get the nag of using the slow feeder. Do not rush. Let the pace dictate by the horse. Never force them to learn the issue at once.

There are many different styles of slow feeders. Hay nets have huge openings but the horse may become entangled. The nets should provide small openings to prevent any accidents. Try to use a net that is about one and a half inches for full grown animals. If the net is small, it will cause frustration and fatigue. It may even cause the animal to stop eating.

Hard slow feeders are made of hard rubber or plastic that is sturdy and does not crack no matter how hot or cold the temperature is. Individuals must not use wooden types. Do not be interested in building your own a grid of steel and placed it on containers. This might create a few hazards.

Chewing while the head is low will create more pressure on their teeth and allow the jaw bones to freely move in different directions. This gives the joints, ligaments, muscles, bone structure and tendons not a stressful act when eating a downward motion. This protects their eyes and tracts in their respiratory against dust and mold spores.

By using a net, it offers a few advantages. They come in different sizes that can hold different amount of hay. Flexibility is found when mounting it. It can be installed on a tree, a wall or a post.

Get referrals from your loved ones and friends. They may know some information that might be useful to you. Try to get some suggestions and advice about how to purchase a feeder.

Price will not matter for owners. They will spend any amount just to let their animals have an easy feeding. At the end of the day, the benefits of using a slow feeder are that it gives the owners and horses a time to relax.
