Why You Must Train Your Dog Properly

By Garrett McMahan

The word obedience often gets a bad rap, but when it comes to fostering a solid bond between you and your dog, obedience training is the best possible way to accomplish that goal. Dogs that are well-trained are happier and safer, and the owner, in turn, is happier as well because they have a loyal companion who truly enhances their life. Here are a few reasons why dog obedience training is essential.

The exuberance and joy of a dog is a wonderful thing to behold, and their playful spirit and loyalty are reasons why we enjoying having these animals as our companion. However, without training, even the sweetest-tempered dog can showcase unacceptable traits such as excessive barking, jumping on people and even chewing up items in your home. With proper training, you can eliminate these problems which will allow you to truly enjoy every minute you spend with your dog.

Aside from breaking bad habits, your pet's safety is one of the biggest reasons why training is essential. Your dog should follow basic commands such as sitting, staying and coming to you when told. The dog also needs to obey these commands in a variety of situations. Imagine if you are at the park and your dog somehow becomes separated from you. If he is well trained, all you must do is tell him to come to you, sit and stay. Otherwise he could get hurt by another dog or even run out into a busy street.

It is fairly easy to train a dog to sit and stay and follow other commands in your home or in your yard, but your dog needs to be trained well enough that they will obey you in situations where there are many dogs or people around. A well-trained dog that can obey a command in many conditions is a truly safe dog. In addition, you can take an obedient dog to many more places. Your friends are more likely to accept your dog into their home and there are many other places where you can bring a well-trained animal. Dogs hate to be left behind, so your well-behaved pet will love the fact that he or she can come along with you to many places.

Sometimes people confuse dominance and obedience, and our goal with dog training is not to break a dog into submission, it's just simply to make your time together as enjoyable as possible. Dogs want to be led, and this is an instinct for them that harkens all the way back to their days of living in packs. Each pack has a leader, and in your pack, you are the leader. Even humans are happy to follow a good, patient leader who has clear expectations and dogs certainly thrive when they know how to keep you happy and pleased. A high level of obedience creates a solid bond and giving out calm commands and having them obeyed is certainly a lot more pleasant than being frustrated with your dog. A happy owner definitely translates to a happy dog.

Too often people choose a dog training program that doesn't address all of their needs or perhaps promises to have your dog trained in less than a week. You need to select a training program that includes a huge variety of basic skills, including walking on a loose leash, sitting, staying and coming on command. They also need to learn how to stay quiet and stay down for an extended period of time. You also want to be able to accomplish this training without having to yell or constantly provide treats, and this takes some time and some patience. A DVD course, such as The Dog's Way, can be an excellent method to achieve all of these goals and get the most out of this special relationship.
