What To Know Before Visiting Beagle Breeders In California

By Rebecca Sanders

Nothing beats having a pet and many people have either chosen a cat or a dog for the sole purpose of companionship. You may have decided on getting a dog and some of your friends have suggested that you visit the nearest beagle breeders in California for a possible puppy purchase. However, before you do decide on the beagle do read on in this article for more information.

Before the 1700s the beagle was used as a hunting hound, and it currently is still classified as such. However it came into disfavor due to its slow speed when compared to the foxhound, which later replaced it as a hunting dog of choice. Many however still retained the beagle as a hunting hound when it came to hunting smaller prey such as rabbits, while most however became just pets and household companions.

Since it is really a hunting dog, expect it to have a lot of energy, thus it may have a hard time adjusting to indoor living and small space living. They will require regular walks of over an hour a day and they will usually chase anything that catches their interest. It is a dog that barks a lot, so you may have a problem with neighbors. Do not think of getting this dog if you plan on living in close proximity with a lot of people.

The beagle is highly intelligent and needs something to do at each moment of time. Should it be bored it will do a lot of chewing on things and may even do some digging. Thus it is important to give it lots of mental stimulation and also a lot of attention. Left to their own devices and when they do get bored, they have a tendency to get destructive.

Even though it is an intelligent dog, it is a stubborn one. This stubborn character makes it one of the more difficult dogs to train as it seems to be always weighing the outcome between commands. It is definitely not a dog for first time owners. This same stubborn character can make this a breed that is hard to housebreak as well.

When the dog reaches maturity, it's weight can reach anywhere between 18 to 30 pounds. It also has an average lifespan of around 10 to 15 years. When they fully grown they stand a little bit higher than a foot at the shoulders.

Probably the best skill that this dog has is that it is a super sniffing dog. It is known as being a nose on legs, and is one of the best bomb and drug sniffers around. If you own this dog be prepared to see it always sniffing around looking for something interesting for it to study or even to play with.

These dogs are also very friendly to everyone they meet, thus making them very lousy guard dogs. Due to their overt friendliness to everyone they are easy prey to thieves. Thus they should not be left outside of the home and be kept under lock and key so that they are not dog napped so to speak.
