By Donna Ellis

Right at this very moment you are in the market for a new pet, or a replacement one, and are set on having a dog instead of a feline. As you have been searching ads in the greater Ohio area, you may have come across a shih tzu puppies for sale OH sign. But It may be a good idea to get some information on this breed first before you make that final commitment.

A shih tzu is a small dog classified as a toy breed and will weigh around ten to 19 pounds when fully grown. It is also called the Chrysanthemum Dog and believed to have originated in Tiber and later on was brought to China, where many believe it is from. Males reach a length of around 11 inches while females reach around 8 to 9 inches when fully grown.

To describe its physical appearance it has a short muzzle and large dark eyes, and coats can differ from being long and fine and wavy and coarse. Regardless of the coat type, the coat of this breed will need a daily brushing and care as it is extremely prone to matting and tangling. If you get one that has wavy and coarse hair, the best kind of haircut for this will be a short haircut. Those with longer finer fur get what is called a princess type cut while those with coarse and wavy hair usually get a teddy bear cut.

When you fully shave off the fur off a shih tzu you will notice that it looks like it is nothing more than a pug with a lot of hair. To give one an idea of what it really looks like, this dog was used as a face model for the Ewok characters in the Star Wars series. That's why they can look cute being dressed up as Ewoks also.

Temperament wise this breed is general very friendly and loyal and affectionate. They do get protective to some degree and will be alert and bark when something is off or amiss. They do get along well with strangers and other animals given time and they will fight usually. It can be provoked to fight back however, if you tease it a lot and try to get its possessions.

The dog is generally healthy throughout its life, except when it gets older. As it gets older it will develop its share of skin and eye problems and will also suffer from nighttime bouts of reverse sneezing. It is of prime importance that you keep an eye on its diet and health maintenance as closely as possible.

Prices will vary greatly for this breed, and sometime you can get them from free as people sometimes give them away due to their being popular and such. If you do buy them expect a range of anywhere from USD 100 to a few hundred more, all depending of course on demand and also if it is of a champion bloodline or not.

The foregoing article thus has shown some things you should consider before getting this breed. Always leave no stone unturned when taking on a new pet as it takes a lot or responsibility to be an owner.
