By Scott Johnson

Right now you have landed on this article page because you are making a search for a new dog as a companion and as a pet. You have also recently seen an Old English Sheepdog puppies for sale advertisement. Before you do make a commitment and buy one, do read on in this article for a few facts and tips about the said breed.

The breed in question is classified as a herding dog by most if not all dog societies in the world today. And although they have been bred as show dogs as of late, most of their herding instincts and behaviors have been lessened somewhat. However, they will sometimes on occasion try to herd small children and even pets into groups by circling them, nipping at them and even poling them.

Some people will believe that this dog, due to its size, makes for a good guard dog. This mistaken notion is probably due to its deep and ringing barking. However, this dog is actually quite timid when it comes to strangers, and will be a bit skittish at times also.

When young, the dogs of this breed are quite playful an active. Hand in hand with its big size, then it is much recommended that you keep this dog in a place where it has plenty of space to play around in. It is therefore quite obvious that this dog is not made for small space or small house living. It is also a dog that will require regular daily exercises or walks for an hour at the minimum.

This dog is also known to show alpha dog tendencies when it is allowed to, thus making it a bit stubborn and hard to control. Thus its owner should also exhibit lots of confidence and a strong personality for this dog to follow orders. If its prospective owner lack these traits, it will be very hard to control.

Long and shaggy is what characterizes the fur of this dog and will require a lot clipping and grooming. The fur will also be prone to lots of debris being stuck to it, especially around the mouth and chin areas. This is due to the fact that this dog is a prolific drool machine, as well as a flatulent one at that.

Most if not a majority of the health complications that this breed will encounter will be related to its shaggy fur. They will experience temperature regulation problems and so the fur must be kept short during the hot season or summer months. Likewise the fur around its eyes should be trimmed short so as not to irritate and infect the eyes.

Expect this breed to live on a average about ten to twelve years, which is not really that long considering its big size. Regular checkups with the vet, as well as a good diet, will extend the lifespan somewhat as well as extra doses of love and care.
